The New Music Biz
In case you haven’t noticed, the world is changing. The old record industry model of locking bands in to contracts and making money off their talent could be coming to an end. Below are some links to articles and resources that discuss the current music industry and explore some of the new options available for recording, selling, promoting, and buying music.
Record Industry Commentary

New Music Businesses Forging the Way
With record labels apparently unable to change quick enough with the times, the accessability of quality recording equipment, and more musicians wanting to control their own music, a new record industry is forming. Here are a few links to sites that are helping to forge the way.
- Creative Commons - Licensing for Artists
- Magnatune - Music Label, Distribution, Promotion
- Amie Street - Music Distribution
Do It Yourself Music
SRQScene supports the move that many artists are making away from large industry. With technology becoming more and more affordable and in some instances free, musicians are more easily able to record their music, develop graphics material, and sell and promote their music. We are collecting information about free or “open source” tools available to musicians that can make your next album a hell of a lot cheaper. Check back for an Artists’ Tools Page. If you know of other tools that are inexpensive, free, or are resources that are “outside the box” of the current, archaic recording industry, Let Us Know about them. We might just post it.
